Cold Bore Shift: The Truth About Your First Shot

Ask around at any club and somebody will tell you their rifle throws the first round. Cold bore shift is one of the most widely believed effects in precision shooting, and one of the least well measured. It matters, because the first round out of a cold rifle is the one that counts on a hunt, on the first stage of a match, or on a cold start at an unknown distance. The trouble is that almost nobody collects enough first shots to tell a real effect apart from ordinary group dispersion.

Three different things wearing one label

Most of the confusion comes from stacking three separate conditions under one name. They do not have the same causes and they do not behave the same way.

  • Cold bore. The barrel is at ambient temperature. Nothing else is implied, and the bore may be filthy from the last session.
  • Clean bore, or the fouling shot. The carbon and copper layer the rifle normally shoots with has just been stripped out.
  • First round from a cold rifle in the field. Cold barrel, unknown fouling state, possibly damp, fired by a shooter who has not shot yet that day.

Almost every anecdote about cold bore shift is really the third case, which bundles the first two together with a pile of other variables. Separate them before you record anything.

What could plausibly move the first shot

  • Bore condition. A freshly cleaned bore behaves differently from a fouled one until the fouling layer is re-established. How many rounds that takes varies by barrel.
  • Oil or moisture in the bore. Solvent that has crept out of the throat overnight is a physical difference between shot one and shot two.
  • Stock and bedding stress. A rifle out of a case, or in a different rest, can settle differently on the first shot.
  • The shooter. Position, natural point of aim and trigger control are at their worst on the first shot of the day.
  • Conditions. Light and mirage change through a string.

Note how few of those are about barrel temperature. Steel expands with heat, but a barrel warming over three or four rounds is a small change next to a bore that has just lost its fouling layer. Why most reported cold bore shift is probably fouling or noise

Two things are usually going on. The first is that many shooters clean at the end of every session, so the first shot of the next session is also the first shot through a clean bore. That is a fouling effect, not a temperature effect, and the fix is different. Related reading: barrel break-in and what fouling actually does.

The second is simple randomness. If your rifle groups half an inch at 100 yards, shots land all over that half inch. Pull one shot out of a group at random, label it special, and a fair share of the time it lands wide of centre. Do that once per range trip, remember the ones that confirmed the theory, and you have a firm belief in a cold bore shift built on nothing.

The statistics problem is the whole problem

You get one genuine first shot per session, so ten range trips gives ten shots, and ten shots is a small sample by any standard. To claim a shift you have to show that the distribution of those first shots differs from the distribution of your ordinary shots. With a sample that small the bar is high.

It also means you cannot eyeball it. Extreme spread is a poor statistic here because it keys off the two worst shots. A measure that uses every shot, such as mean radius, suits this comparison far better. Learning to read a target properly is the first step.

How to find out whether your cold bore shift is real

Fire the first shot of every session at its own clean aiming point, record it as a single data point, then shoot your normal string separately. Do that for as many sessions as you can stand, then compare the centre and spread of your first shots against your ordinary shots. That comparison is the test. Anything less is a story.

Record the same fields every time, or the data is useless later:

  • Clean or fouled, and rounds fired since the last cleaning.
  • Whether the bore was dried after cleaning, and with what.
  • Ambient temperature and rough conditions.
  • Time since the last shot through the rifle.
  • Position and rest, which change more than people admit.

If it turns out to be real

The response depends on which of the three conditions is driving it. If it is a clean-bore effect, stop cleaning to bare steel before an event, or fire foulers first. If it is oil or moisture, change your storage and drying routine. If it is bedding or position, that is a mechanical problem, not a ballistic one. Only if a shift survives all of that does a hold adjustment for the first round make sense, and it should be sized from your own measured data rather than a round number someone quoted.

The honest conclusion

Cold bore shift is real in some rifles. It is also invoked constantly by shooters who have never gathered enough first shots to know whether theirs exists. There is no shame in that, only in mistaking it for knowledge. Log first shots as their own data for a season and let the numbers tell you whether your cold bore shift is a property of the rifle or just the ordinary scatter you already live with.
